Discovering the Mediterranean wildlife
Visiting the Antica Fattoria la Parrina’s wildlife area means stepping through the increasingly blurred boundaries that separate a world where nature and man have found their balance, and a dimension where the wild soul of the Maremma retains all of its age-old charm.Stretching out across around 585 hectares in a predominantly hilly landscape, the areas devoted to farming sit side by side with a large wooded area that provides a safe haven for both local and migratory wildlife. If you pick the best time of day, in other words early in the morning and at sunset especially, and with just a little patience, you may easily tick off a list of animals in a habitat that includes many species such as hares, pine martens, stone martens, weasels, hedgehogs, porcupines, badgers, squirrels, foxes, as well as larger animals such as fallow deer, roe deer and wild boar. Raise your eyes towards the sky and the highest branches and you may well see, among others, pheasants, quail, hoopoe, jays, woodpeckers, bee-eaters, and a wide range of diurnal birds of prey, such as hawks, kites, buzzards, kestrels, and nocturnal ones like owls, scops owls, barn owls and tawny owls. Then there are the species that prefer larger stretches of water: mallard ducks, teal, moorhen and herons. Don’t forget, at the Antica Fattoria la Parrina you should always have your camera and binoculars with you!
